This program was initiated in 1992 by Janice Schweder, a teacher and Department Head of Business at Hagersville Secondary School. Hagersville Secondary School was the first high school within the public school system of the Haldimand area to initiate a student Crimestoppers program. The success of this program gained local and provincial recognition and the Hagersville Secondary School Crime Stoppers Program was designated by the Ontario Ministry of education as a model for other schools across the province to follow.

In September of 1993. TV Ontario came to Hagersville Secondary School and did a videotaping of the program which was aired later in the fall As a result, the program began to spread rapidly to other board of education around us and at present several secondary schools within Haldimand Norfolk have joined the program

In 2003 Jodi Fleming was designated International Student Crime Stopper of the Year and Represented Hagersville at the International C.S.I. conference in Australia. Jodi has been a valuable member of Student Crime Stoppers at H.S.S., since her grade nine year and rose through the ranks to become its co-chair in her graduating year 2002 - 2003.

The program is funded by donations from members of the business community, service organizations and individuals, provides a means for students to call in anonymous information about incidents of school crime in exchange for a cash reward. A student board of directors is responsible for publicity of the program, fund-raising and determining the amount of cash rewards to be paid to the anonymous tipsters

Thanks and appreciation to Crimestoppers of Haldimand Norfolk and Tillsonburg, especially the late Bill Courtnage from Hagersville Ontario for their support of our program, to our financial sponsors, and to the police co-ordinators who helped us set up the planning and implemation of the program, Alex Williamson and Mike Rigby. Together we have established a safer environment for the education of the students of Hagersville Secondary School and a precedent for others to follow

In memory or Bill Courtnage. A bursary was established in 1999. the bursary will be awarded annually to two graduating members of student Crimestoppers programs in Haldimand Norfolk and Tillsonburg. the award, worth $1000 each will recognize student Crimestoppers members who have demonstrated a commitment to the programs success and who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and academic excellence. The award will be presented on the basis of the nominees achievements and contributions to the betterment of the student community.
